We are at the sixth of my Top Ten Questions for the 2009 NFL season: Will the Cowboys be a playoff team now that Jerry Jones has removed the cancer known as TO?
Tough call, this one, for a number of reasons:
1) The division, the NFC East includes the Philadelphia Eagles – an NFC Championship game team from last season – and the Super Bowl champion New York Giants from just two seasons ago.
2) While Jerry Jones, Jessica Simpson and many rabid Cowboys fans would like to proclaim it as true, there is scant evidence that quarterback Tony Romo is truly the saviour he was being touted as after signing a huge new deal a couple years back. Still, Jones says Romo is the team leader.
3) Roy Williams could very well be just the type of me-first player that was the reason Tony Romo’s decision-making skills got skewed in the first place. He could be a bust in Dallas. Obviously, Jerry Jones does not think so, however, as it is obvious that Williams was brought to Dallas in midseason from Detroit because Jones knew he’d be replacing Owens this offseason.
4) They can’t hang on to the football: only San Francisco, Buffalo, Detroit and Minnesota dropped more live balls than did the Cowboys last season. Ouch!
5) Penalties! No team had more penalties on offense than Dallas. Not one. The Cowboys racked up over 950 yards in penalties; only the Packers had more.

Unlike most Jessica Simpson fans, Tony Romo appears to have good taste in music.
Of course, there are other major factors for the Cowboys this season, but they do have an impressive 11 picks in the upcoming draft. As a team needing a ton of depth on both lines, they’re going to need those picks to pan out. No pressure on the scouting department. These are the same scouts that thought it was a good idea to give up a first, third and round pick for Williams last year – a deal that still might turn out, but which also cost the team a $9-million cap hit this year.
So, to get Williams as their number one receiver this season, the Cowboys gave up Terrell Owens, $9-million, and a first round, third round and sixth round draft pick. For his sake, the team had better make the playoffs!
