Arena Football League Newest Addition To FanYard

Thanks to some quick work by our dev team at FanYard, fans of Arena Football now have a new arena in which to keep track of every game and how it played out according to their own predictions and the Yardstick, or our measurement of fan consensus.

This is an exciting game to watch, especially live at a game. Check out this picture below of Chicago Rush WR/LB (that’s right, wide receiver slash linebacker!), as he stands on the boards that make up the sidelines, ala hockey, and gets right at the crowd. Check out the kids in the front row. Arena Football prides themselves on having a fun, family atmosphere and being accessible to their fans. If you have not been to a live game…do it this season. You will not be sorry! And it won’t take a big bite out of your wallet.

The AFL’s 22nd season kicks of tomorrow night, as the New Orleans VooDoo visit the Los Angeles Avengers. As our good friends over at Football Jabber point out, this game is not televised, and that seems kind of strange. In fact, very strange, to me. Lee and his crew know their AFL - along with everything else to do with football - and you can get a good breakdown of the games by following that link above.

Here’s to football in any form!

Yao-ch!!

The 84-foot tall Chinese basketball player lovingly known as Yao Ming to his adoring fans is done for the season and may even miss the Olympics in his home country - although Houston Rockets team doctors believe he could very well still play in those game if the injury is correctly treated - due a stress fracture in his left foot.

With Houston on a 12-game winning streak and Ming being just one of six NBA players to be averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game this season, there hovers now a cloud of uncertainty over the rising hopes of Rockets fans and management for postseason success. The team learned the news just hours ago, before today’s shootaround, as they get ready to face the Washington Wizards at home.

The  Yardstick for the game favors the home team to win by ten points.

Rollin’ Along

Hard to say what the Cleveland Cavaliers will have gained from their latest trade moves in the long run, but they sure laid a beating on the Vancouver Memphis Grizzlies yesterday, 109-89. The Yardstick for LeBron and company had the Cavs winning by eleven points.

The game that has most of my attention tonight pits the Detroit Pistons, still on the road and fresh off the ass-whopping they laid on the Suns a couple nights ago, against the Denver Nuggets. FanYard users have the Pistons winning this one by five, according to the Yardstick for the game. We’ll have to see if they can keep it up, and tip-off is at 9 EST.

Beat Down Shows Arrested Development

The Phoenix Suns were embarrassed at home today, losing by thirty points to the Detroit Pistons who, in Shaq’s words, “came out with a lot of energy, more energy than we did.” Good eye, man. Good eye. It was only the Suns’ third loss to an Eastern opponent in 25 games this season, and the end of their 11-game winning streak versus the East. The Yardstick for this game called for a 6-point victory for Phoenix.

In three games played since the trade that brought the big man over from the Miami Heat, the Suns are just 1-2. People are going to be very wary very soon if things don’t start looking up. Phoenix next gets the chance to showcase their trade skills and new lineup when they travel to Memphis to take on the Vancouver Grizzlies on Tuesday.

Tennessee at Memphis Showdown

Too little belief in Shaq and the Suns and maybe a little over-hype for KG and the Celtics led to a wrong call by FanYard users on last night’s Boston at Phoenix game, as the Suns ended up winning 85-77. The other game discussed yesterday had users correctly predicting a big win by the Mavericks at Grizzlies, with Dallas winning that game 98-83.

Tonight, switching over to college hoops, is John Calipari’s second chance at leading the first undefeated NCAA Men’s team since Bobby Knight’s 1976 Indiana Hoosiers. Almost at the end of the regular season, his Memphis Tigers are ranked Number One at 26-0. They host Tennessee, ranked Number Two, tonight at 9 EST, and the Yardstick for this matchup favors the home squad to remain undefeated with a three-point victory.

Game On

Tonight, the new-look Phoenix Suns battle the NBA’s most-improved team (over last year), when they play host to the Boston Celtics. At FanYard, the Yardstick for this game favors the visiting squad by three points, as the Suns have yet to prove that their deal for Shaquille O’Neal will pay the dividends they are fantasizing for, while the Celtics offseason moves have made them a true contender for this year’s title.

Another interesting game tonight pits the Dallas Mavericks and the recently recycled Jason Kidd, as they travel to Memphis to take on the Vancouver Grizzlies. The Yardstick favors the visitors by nine points.

Back With Shaq

Once again, I have been lax in keeping daily writings, but it is due to a complete turn around in sleeping schedules that has me lying in bed from 1-2 a.m. until early morning, trying to sleep and being too agro to get up and say the heck with it, thinking I might fall asleep at any moment and not wanting to miss that moment. Well, today, I said the heck with it and just did not bother trying to sleep after 5 a.m., and, while this may not be the best blog piece in the world due to my sleep-deprived brain, it should at the very least get us back on track.

i_am_sleepy.jpg

So, where were we? Ah, yes. Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte and President Bush’s possible pardons and MLBs lack of integrity and the generally very low care-factor of much of the public at large.

Well, enough of that. Two days of paying attention to a baseball story that does not involve the last couple games of the World Series, or a playoff series loss by the Red Sox or Yankees, is enough for me until sometime in the fall.

Now that that is done with, we can get back to a little basketball, as Shaquille O’Neal is expected to start for the Phoenix Suns tonight against his old team, the Los Angeles Lakers. Shaq should play about 20 minutes and says he is ready, willing and able to run the court now that he has someone to pass him the ball, ala assist-master Steve Nash. Apparently FanYard users believe the hype, as the Yardstick for this game favors the Suns to win by five points.

One more big trace happened in the past day or so, as Jason Kidd has been sent back to the Dallas Mavericks from the New Jersey Nets. So far, FanYard users must have a little more faith in the ability/heart of the player I think has been the biggest loser in the NBA for years, Vince Carter, as the Yardstick for tonight’s Bulls at Nets game still favors the Nets by five. Let’s see how the Nets fall with Carter having to (***laughs here***) pick up some of the slack.

Soon, we’ll discuss some offseason NFL free agent talk and player franchising, as tomorrow is the deadline for NFL free agency.

Bush to Pardon Roger Clemens?

There are a ton of opinions about the show trial of Roger Clemens and his former trainer, Brian McNamee, yesterday on Capitol Hill. Much of it revolves around the star pitcher, of course, and his proclamations of innocence in the face of seemingly damning evidence. Of course, most of the evidence that suggests he willingly and knowingly accepted anal injections of performance-enhancing, banned substances is entirely circumstantial. Much of the rest comes from McNamee, who has proven time and time again that his word cannot be trusted, even under threat of perjury.

I find it very interesting that many of the commentors at many of the blogs that I have read dealing with this subject, have, of course, found a way to politicize it - as if the whole thing were set up to further divide the American public, if such a thing is even possible. Somehow, the discussions keep getting sidetracked into tirades about the current administration, like every subject seems to these days/years.

JOIN FanYard - Be A Chosen One!

All of this, simply because the Republican members of the hearing rarely questioned Roger, who is a good friend of the Bush family. They did, however, pile it on McNamee. Well deserved, of course, but not necessarily the point of the hearing. Everyone knows McNamee is a liar. He freely admits it. The name-calling directed at McNamee by the Republican members of the hearing committee really ticked some people off. Although it was not incorrect, it was, perhaps, slightly out of place. The implied clemency towards Roger is what has some up in arms.

It has now been taken one step further, as one of the lawyers for the corrupt former cop / trainer / drug dealer McNamee has publicly suggested that Roger Clemens can afford to continue to lie because, “It would be the easiest thing in the world for George W. Bush, given the corrupt proclivities of his administration, to say Roger Clemens is an American hero.”

Of course a hero should not have to go to jail under this administration - just like the last one; this is not a partisan issue - and rightly so. No one wants to see another hero [of the President’s] spend time behind bars for “crimes” that really did not hurt anyone anyway. People should be pardoned for this type of thing and it should be brushed under a rug. Preferably a red rug; a long one; a carpet, even, being rolled towards the entrance to the Hall of Fame. Well, some people, anyway. Friends, let’s say. Of the Bush family.

Hey, we all make excuses sometimes for our friends, even when we know we should not, right? We can’t all be above reproach, you know.

Anyway, G. W. Bush’s name is being thrown around as if people know for a fact that he is going to do something that many people would find offensive and that would show an utter disdain for the laws of the land. Surely, the President will speak out to his people and tell them that, in fact, he will not interfere with the proper workings of the justice system this time, won’t he? Mustn’t he, I mean, just to save face? He is no slave. Surely, the leader of the free world can’t let these piddly lawyers and the national press talk in such a degrading manner about him, without at least standing tall and discussing the issue, can he?

Whatever the case, I am still going to be wishing that FanYard had that Yardstick for bullshit truth, I am sure.

Who knows, the way this whole thing is turning into just another perfect American soap opera? These are, after all, important issues to the nation. With the last few important national crisis (Britney and her kids, Lindsay and her cocaine, Paris and her…whatever) now somewhat under control, we need something else to keep us occupied.

At least until March Madness or the NBA playoffs get here.

Roger Clemens Caught Lying?

Was Roger Clemens lying today on Capitol Hill? The Congressional hearing took place today in which members of U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform listened to testimony from both the 7-time Cy Young award winner and his former friend and trainer, former police officer Brian McNamee. McNamee claims he gave Clemens banned substances in the form of anal injections. Clemens denies the claim.

Of course, Clemens is the pitcher in real life, not the catcher. He would have had to have been the catcher if McNamee is telling the truth this time. Who knows?

Unfortunately for Clemens, his very good friend - and generally acknowledged by all sides (baseball, Clemens, McNamee, Republicans, Democrats, camera crews and local coffee shops and pub owners) all-around good, honest fellow - Andy Pettitte, is now making claims that would make either a liar, a Saint, or a probable Alzheimer’s patient out of The Rocket. If not one of those, then it would make both Pettitte and McNamee out to be liars.

Now, McNamee is a universally acknowledged liar. Granted, we have all told lies. (Well, everyone except Jesus, as he was apparently perfect in every way except that hair-do.) However, McNamee has told lies under oath on multiple occasions, and been either caught up in his lies or so close to being caught up in his lies that he had a “change of heart” and decided to come [more] clean than before. In general, as earnest as he seems, we must take his testimony with a major league size grain of salt.

JOIN FanYard: Get Lucky!

Andy Pettitte, though, must be taken seriously, we are told. Why else would he volunteer to come forward and tell these politicians that he had, indeed, received anal injections of banned substances from Mr. McNamee himself? He, too, could have denied the allegations. Instead, he not only gave himself up to the gods of truth, he also implicated his good buddy Roger in what could turn out to be a perjury case for someone.

Pettitte felt that he had done something wrong and wanted to come clean about it. Jolly good for him, I say. Unfortunately, he was so compelling in his previous testimony that when he asked to be excused from today’s hearing, his request was granted, thus denying the public of the one other person who could have helped make this whole, sordid mess even tougher to figure out.

I listened to the whole thing this morning live on television, having lucked across the only excellent, unscripted program on TV today - until that new Tom Green show comes on later. While I personally don’t care whether The Rocket did steroids or HGH, or even MDMA or LSD for that matter, I did find listening to such a well-known public persona very interesting. Clemens perfectly imitated the trademark specific-topic-evasion tactics so well cultured and fine-tuned by the very people who were grilling him and McNamee.

I mean politicians, of course. Clemens, I believe, will make a great one someday. If he so chooses. Even if he does get found out to be a liar, he could still fall back on politics and go very far with it. What other line of work can you be found out to be a cheating, dishonest, backstabbing, self-serving liar and get a promotion for it, after all?

Not that I think these things about Clemens. Right now. Honestly, I don’t know what to think, so I reserve my right to be undecidedly hopeful. I want to believe him. I want it to come out that it was not a sports legend that millions of youngsters have looked up to over the years that was the liar here.

I don’t want to find out that Roger Clemens looked the game of baseball, its fans, that cute, witty Congresswoman from D.C. that we see sometimes on The Colbert Report who was a member of this hearing, the rest of the committee and, by association, the U.S. government, its people, and the rest of the free world (Except Finland. They, too, think baseball is boring, but have their own version of it, called, Pesapallo.), and bald-faced lied straight to them while under the gun.

I would much rather see the former policeman-turned drug dealer and dream destroyer be the bad guy, again, here.

I just don’t know. Clemens said all day how he was just too trusting of people and too forgiving. Maybe we were too trusting, too, I don’t know. One day, maybe the truth will be served.

Until then, I’ll wish we had a Yardstick for bullshit truth on FanYard.

Rudy Gay YouTube Slam Dunk Promo

If anyone of you out there can slam dunk like no one’s business in a safe manner that uses no props, get that thing on film now and you might see Vancouver Memphis Grizzlies swingman Rudy Gay recreate your moves on national television. Gay has a YouTube slam dunk contest asking for your help. It is unknown to this writer whether or not he’ll give props to you for your YouTube submission, but chances are very good that he will.

[youtube N3FbX-17iOY]

A nice thanks by Gay would be to make a YouTube thank you himself, showing him doing your dunk at the All-Star Weekend in New Orleans followed by your original video that he copied.

It would be nice as well if you link your videos to this page, to help people with their searches when they want something other than Google and the rest of the non-human powered search engines.
